UPDATE: Since originally writing this Bowmar Nutrition Protein review; a few things have changed with Bowmar Nutrition and quality is coming into question. You can read that post here.

UPDATE: I’ve received additional information, pointing to proof that changes to the formulas were in fact made compared to the products that I based this review on. You can read that post here.

So to be upfront: until a few months ago, I had never heard of Bowmar Nutrition or any of their products, and to this point, you may not have either. They’re a relatively young company, they sell their products from their website, and outside of their website and social media, reviews and posts for their products aren’t easy to come by.  My girlfriend is actually the one who introduced me to them via their Instagram account.  Once she did, I will admit, I was immediately intrigued.  Not only was I taken by their love and dedication to their health and fitness, but also by their spirit and their genuine joy in their own products.

One true eye-catching aspect of their product line is the flavors they offer.

Yes, almost anyone who has looked into or purchased protein powders is familiar with the typical offerings of chocolate, vanilla, cookies and cream, and a recent trend of cereal-themed flavors.  Bowmar Nutrition decided to take a slightly different path with flavors such as Birthday Cake, Pumpkin Spice, Hazelnut Coffee, Frosted Cookie, Hot Chocolate, and Blueberry Cheesecake.

Personally, up to this point, I’ve only had Frosted Cookie, Hot Chocolate, Hazelnut Coffee, and Blueberry Cheesecake, so I’m not going to review the individual flavors (which are all awesome anyway) I will review the protein itself.

The protein is smooth, powdery, and has a great texture compared to some proteins out there.  In fact, this is the very first protein line that I’ve not card to mix with just water and ice.  (Hazelnut Coffee makes a nice iced coffee in the afternoon.)  Another aspect of this protein powder that makes it different from other proteins I’ve had in the past, is how well it can be used elsewhere.  I can’t begin to tell you how many times I’ve used a scoop of protein in something I’m cooking, be it protein waffles to my ultimate protein peanut butter cookies, if I can use it, I use it.  Hell, I used to be notorious for using creamer and sugar in my coffee, but now; a scoop of Frosted Cookie, and that’s all I need!  I love this protein because for me, simply put: it’s multifaceted.   (And be sure to check out Sarah Bowmar’s Healthy Dessert Recipe E-book for a ton of more ideas!!)

I’m not oblivious to the fact that there’s more to protein powder than taste and usefulness, you also have to take into consideration what’s in the product itself.  With Bowmar, it’s pretty straightforward: 100% Whey Protein Concentrate, Whey Protein Isolate (milk), maltodextrin, natural and artificial flavor, lecithin, and sucralose.  The macros break down as follows:

  • Calories 120
  • Total Fat 1g
  • Sat Fat 0g
  • Cholesterol 32mg
  • Sodium 36mg
  • Total Carbohydrate 4g
  • Sugars 3g
  • Dietary Fiber 0g
  • Protein 22g

Again, for a protein powder; pretty straightforward.  Nothing alarming or truly questionable.

The one area I’ve seen people question when it comes to Bowmar is the price point.  If you break it down, it comes out as follows:  For $35 you get a 1lb tub, which is good for 16 servings at a cost of $2.18 per.  At $70, you get a 5lbs tub which will get you 82 servings, which averages out to .85 a serving.  Yes, to some that $70 price point might seem steep, but compare that to say a tub of Ghost Whey Protein, which will run you $40 for 26 servings ($1.54 per), or MuscleTech NitroTech that runs $63 for 39 servings ($1.62 per) and at the end of the day, you’re actually spending less per every scoop you pull out of that 5lbs tub.

For me personally, the math checks out anytime I have to rationalize purchasing a 5lb tub, as we can go through them at home pretty quickly if we’re not careful.  However, I’m more confident in spending my money on Bowmar products than I am on any other brands in the game right now.  It’s also why I curse them under my breath every time they release a new flavor. 😊

So be sure to check out Bowmar Nutrition along with Sarah and Josh Bowmar on Instagram.  They’re worth a follow if nothing else than to make you feel like you need to be going to the gym 3 times a day. (You can also follow me on Instagram, and see how I don’t go to the gym nearly enough)
