Plex Announces Plex Arcade Game Subscription Service

by Michael

Plex announced today, via their blog, their new subscription-based gaming service Plex Arcade.

Before you roll your eyes at yet another game streaming service like Amazon Luna or Google Stadia, Plex Arcade isn’t focusing on modern games, but going the way of services like AtGames ArcadeNet that offers a more retro feel.  Plex Arcade will let you play classic Atari arcade games like Centipede, Super Breakout, Missile Command, and more, along with games from the classic Atari 2600 and 7800.  At launch, there will be a total of 27 games available.

The service will cost $3 a month if you’re a Plex Pass subscriber and $5 a month if you are not.

While the Plex Arcade has a few requirements to get up and running, like a Plex media server running on a Windows or macOS computer, the service will allow you to play games on iOS, Apple TV, Android TV, Amazon Fire TV, Windows, macOS, and Android devices.  So in that regard, you’re not too limited.  The service also supports any Bluetooth or USB game controller, although Plex recommends a Sony DualShock 4 or Xbox One controller to ensure the best performance.

While the service also supports adding your own emulators and ROMs, paying $3 or $5 a month to play old Atari games may be a bit much, outside the nostalgia factor.

(Speaking of nostalgia, with this news, its the perfect time to revisit some old favorites in The Great Retro Video Game episode of the podcast…)

There is currently a free seven-day trial for Plex Arcade if you want to check it out for yourself.
